Making Your Home a ‘Smart’ Home

Posted on 30th January 2020 by H2 Property Services

There are so many things we can do now to bring our homes into the ‘smart’ age, and in this article, H2 Property Services are going to look at the ways that homeowners can bring technology into their homes to truly modernise it.

Do you need a local plumber, electrician, gas or heating engineer?

Give our team a call today on 020 7751 3344 and let’s see how we can help you.

    Our top 5 ‘smart’ devices for your home;

    1 – Smart Doorbell

These are becoming more and more popular for homeowners around the world for a number of reasons. The security aspect is one of the biggest draws; you can see who’s at the door if you’re in a different room or even if you’re at work, thanks to the ability to link your smart doorbell to your phone.

As video doorbells are becoming more widely recognised, too, they can act as a deterrent for any potential thieves or intruders who may be thinking of trying to get into your home.

    2 – Smart Lighting

Sometimes you don’t want to get up off the sofa just to turn a light on, and now, thanks to smart lighting, you don’t have to. Not only that, you can change the brightness and even the colour of your lighting if you have the appropriate smart bulbs. By linking your smart bulbs to the appropriate app on your phone or tablet, you can change the lighting as you see fit.

    3 – Smart Thermostats

As well as being crucial to being comfortable in our homes, our thermostats can have a significant impact on our monthly expenditure – if we’re too liberal with our heating, we might find that our energy bills are higher than we’d like. With smart thermostats, your heating will learn your habits and your routines, turning on and off as and when necessary.

Some also have movement sensors, which means they can detect when people are milling around the house and when the house is empty, using this information to learn your schedule.

    4 – Smart Locks

One of the latest additions to the catalogue of smart home accessories is the smart deadlock. If you’re away from home and you need to let a visitor in, or a family member is coming round to water the plants but doesn’t have a spare key, then you can send them an electronic key that unlocks your door’s smart lock.

These keys can be set up to work within a given time period, so you can be precise about who gets in and when. The electronic keys are downloaded from an app and are then sent to the person in question.

    5 – Smart Speakers

“Ok Google…”, “Alexa…”; these phrases are becoming more and more common as people around the world introduce the smart speaker/’assistant’ into their homes. They can be immensely helpful, helping you compile shopping lists, reading out recipes and even booking Ubers for you at your request.

If you’re particularly tech-savvy, you can link your smart speaker with other devices – if you have a Google Chromecast, for example, you can ask you Google Home to turn on Netflix. While the smart speakers may not serve the security purposes of other gadgets in this piece, they can still be very useful for other things.

There are plenty of ways you can turn your home into a smart one. Whether you’d like a smart speaker for your favourite songs or you want the extra security of a smart deadlock, there’s a litany of devices available to satisfy any technophile.
