Troubleshooting: No Hot Water from Taps or Shower

Posted on 30th May 2018 by H2 Property Services

Whether it is summer or winter, the chilly nights are no time for your hot water to go kaput.

As the reliability of boilers increases year on year, it’s becoming less of on issue, but our engineers are not worried. Where there is complex mechanics, there will always be a need for the speedy and professional service of boiler and gas engineers like those at H2 Property Services.

Here you’ll find all the troubleshooting prompts you check to identify the issue.

We have qualified plumbers, electricians, gas and heating engineers – please call the experts if you need our help. This article advises the checks you can make, we DO NOT advise you try to fix your Boiler yourself, if you are not qualified.

    General Checks

There are a few general checks that you may be able to do yourself, but always consider calling an expert for assistance. Like us! 020 7751 3344.

    Reset the Boiler

Reset the boiler using the reset switch or the power button.

    Check the Thermostat

Check your thermostats in case they have been accidentally knocked onto a lower setting.

Check the Boiler Clock and Timer

The clock and timer may be incorrect and will have to be reset for your hot water to come on when you would like it to.

Have you had a Power Cut?

Power cuts will reset your boiler to factory settings which will cause the hot water to turn off in some cases.

Check the Diverter Valve on the radiator

A diverter valve controls the heating of the radiators and the hot water; if your heating works but hot water doesn’t, it could be the diverter valve.

    Gas Boiler Checks

We would also advise you enlist the help of a qualified gas engineer to troubleshoot and fix issues with a gas boiler.

    Check the Pilot Light

Sometimes the pilot light goes out; check your boiler manual to see if you can reignite it and call an engineer if the problem persists.

    Check the Pressure Relief Valve

The pressure relief valve may help you but if it is faulty, you’ll need professional help.

Is there a Leak from the Boiler?

A leak in the central heating system will cause a pressure drop and when pressure is going to drop on you, you’ll notice a problem with hot water and a leak may also cause rot or structural damage if left unchecked.

Do your other Gas Appliances still work?

Other gas appliances (if you have them) should be working. If they are not, the culprit may be your gas supply, so call an engineer.

    Electric Boilers

We have qualified electricians and boiler engineers, so no matter what type of boiler you have, we have someone to help.

Check the Circuit Breaker and Fuse

Has the circuit breaker tripped? Or is a fuse blown?

If this is the case, simply reset the circuit breaker or replace the fuse. If this is ineffective or the boiler trips the circuit breaker after the reset, then you may have an electrical fault that must be looked at by an engineer.

    Is the water lukewarm?

Heating elements are an integral part of most electric water heaters, with one at the top and one at the bottom. Often, the upper element controls the lower elements, so if the upper one develops a fault, there will be no hot water whatsoever.

If you have a small amount of hot water coming through or lukewarm water, then this could indicate the lower element is failing. An engineer will have the testing tools required to diagnose this problem.

    Check the Thermostat

For safety reasons the thermostat isn’t easily accessible and its factory settings are always the safest settings to use.

Were you to accidentally set the temperature too high, this would cause burns and it’s therefore imperative that your thermostat only be adjusted by a professional.
